The chin is generally overlooked when people describe a beautiful face. But although there aren’t many poems that celebrate the beauty of the chin, it makes a big difference in your overall appearance. For example, a small or receding chin can make your nose appear larger. Changing the shape and profile of your chin can balance the features of the face.

At Arviv Plastic Surgery, Dr. Ahmed Abdullah has helped many patients love how they look with chin augmentation.

What is Chin Augmentation?

Patients who want to improve the appearance of the chin can opt for what’s chin augmentation, also known as genioplasty.

This procedure reshapes the chin, enlarging it or moving it forward to balance the proportions of the face.

There are a few ways to go about this.

Chin implants are made of a plastic material, and they’re surgically placed in the chin to give patients the profile they want. The surgeon affixes this plastic material to the bone, placing it in the right position to help sculpt the chin.

You can also opt for surgery-free options, which use fillers and inject them into the chin to boost its appearance. However, like other fillers, this procedure only provides a temporary fix.

What Does Chin Implant Surgery Look Like?

Although it’s done under general anesthesia, chin implant surgery is generally an outpatient procedure.

The surgeon makes an incision either in your mouth or under your chin so there won’t be a noticeable scar.

Next, he creates a space to hold the implant and then carefully places the implant.

In some cases, the surgeon may choose instead to adjust the patient’s chin bone, using special tools to separate the edge of the chin bone, reposition it, and set it in place with wires or bone plates and screws.

Either way, the newly reshaped chin will have a noticeable impact on the appearance of your entire face.

In the hands of a skilled surgeon, genioplasty creates a more balanced profile. This does more than change the way your chin looks; it creates harmony among your features.

Recovery After Chin Implant Surgery

If you opt to have chin implant surgery, it’s important to know what to expect during the recovery process.

Like with any surgery, healing will take some time, although you will be able to return to normal activities within just a few weeks.

The first week after surgery, you will probably see swelling, redness, bruising, and some discomfort. You may be prescribed pain medication to help keep you comfortable.

You’ll be given some care instructions to keep the incision area healthy so it can heal well.

After one or two weeks, most of these symptoms should be much less noticeable. You will be able to return to most daily activities.

However, to protect the surgical site, you should avoid things such as heavy lifting or strenuous exercise.

By six weeks post-surgery, you will probably be fully healed. The swelling will have gone down, and the incision site will be well on its way to being completely healed. At this point, your surgeon will probably give you the green light to go back to all your usual activities, including heavy exercise.

The timeline for each patient’s recovery is a little different. To help heal quickly, be sure to follow your surgeon’s post-surgical instructions. Take it easy, and give yourself some TLC to make sure your body has everything it needs to recover effectively.
