WHAT IS BREAST AUGMENTATION SURGERY?
Our facility is known for having the best surgeons in Tampa for breast augmentation. Breast augmentation remains one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures in the United States and one of the most popular breast procedures offered at our practice. In general, augmentation is a surgical enhancement to the size of the breasts. Many seek breast augmentation for many reasons, including but not limited to:
- Uneven size
- Smaller than desired
- After childbirth and nursing
- Have experienced significant weight loss
- Lost breast tissue due to cancer surgery or trauma involving the breast
Breast Augmentation vs Breast Lift
While breast augmentation increases the size and fullness of the breasts, it does not lift them. If your goal is a younger, more perky profile along with a fuller look, we can discuss a breast lift during your initial consultation. Though breast lift is a separate procedure, it can be performed in conjunction with breast augmentation in most cases.
TYPES OF BREAST IMPLANTS
Modern silicone implants, commonly referred to as “gummy bear implants,” feature a semi-solid, cohesive gel. These advanced silicone implants are considered the gold standard by many plastic surgeons due to their natural-looking shape and texture and ability to hold that shape over time.
What’s more, modern silicone breast implants are less likely to rupture, making them safer for patients.

The Breast Augmentation Procedure
Breast augmentation is generally performed on an outpatient basis, allowing patients to recover in the comfort of their homes. Following the administration of anesthesia, Dr. Abdullah will make a discreet incision on the breast, creating a “pocket” for the insertion of the breast implant. The location of the incision depends on numerous factors, each of which Dr. Abdullah will discuss with you during the consultation. Following the insertion of the implant, Dr. Abdullah will close the incision with sutures.
You may be a suitable breast augmentation candidate if you are self-conscious about your breasts. In particular, the following characteristics describe ideal candidates for breast augmentation:
- Your breasts are fully developed
- You feel that your breasts are too small
- Your breasts have lost volume following weight loss, pregnancy, or the natural aging process
- You feel that your breasts are uneven or of different sizes
Other important factors include:
- You must be physically healthy
- Have realistic expectations for the procedure
- Avoid or quit smoking before, during, or after the surgery
- Not pregnant or breastfeeding
During a consultation with Dr. Abdullah, he will discuss the breast augmentation procedure with you in more detail while performing a physical examination and asking you questions about your medical history. He will verify that you are in good health and will inquire about your expectations of surgery to ensure they are reasonable and realistic. If Dr. Abdullah determines that you are a good candidate for breast augmentation, he will develop a treatment plan that addresses your specific goals.
In the days following the breast augmentation procedure, patients generally experience swelling and slight pain that subsides within approximately one week of the procedure. During the first few days following the procedure, plan to rest at home, drink plenty of fluids and eat light meals.
Shortly after that, Dr. Abdullah may advise you to implement massage techniques to ensure breast implants settle into the proper position. Dr. Abdullah will provide detailed aftercare instructions for incision care, pain control, and follow-up appointments. In addition, he will advise when you may return to work or regular activities. Generally speaking, most patients return to work and normal activities one week after having breast augmentation.
Before your surgery, you’ll be placed under general anesthesia. You’ll wake up in a recovery room and will be allowed to go home within a few hours. You’ll need to have someone to drive you, as you will not be released to drive. We advise that you have someone stay with you for the remainder of the day to make sure you stay on schedule with medications and have assistance when needed.
For the first week, most patients have some swelling and pain that can be managed with prescription pain medication. Rest, light meals, and plenty of fluids will help with your healing and comfort level for the first few days. After one week, you should be able to manage any remaining discomfort with over-the-counter medications. Your surgeon will advise you on all post-surgical recovery instructions.
After the first week, you may be advised to begin massage techniques to ensure your breast implants continue to settle into the proper position. You should limit raising your arms overhead and avoid lifting anything more than a few pounds. Wearing a surgical bra will make you more comfortable and help keep swelling to a minimum, although some swelling will persist for several months after the surgery. After your follow-up appointment, you should be able to return to work and limited physical activity as long as it doesn’t involve heavy lifting.
Many studies have already been performed on the safety of breast implants, and many more continue to ensure patient safety. While some patients have experienced side effects, hundreds of thousands of others who have chosen breast augmentation have no ill effects. Though relatively rare, some implant recalls have occurred. The FDA has a procedure for notifying surgeons and surgery centers of any recall to notify patients of implications and options.
The National Breast Implant Registry (NBIR) was established in September 2018 in collaboration with the FDA and breast implant manufacturers to collect information on breast implant procedures. Information like patient demographics, types of devices, and surgical techniques are gathered so that potential complications can be monitored to monitor the implants’ safety. Since research can take a long time, this registry improves patient care and the efficiency of studies.
As with any medical implant or surgical procedure, breast implants and augmentation surgery carry some risks. Your surgeon will discuss these with you in detail during your consultation and will continue to answer any questions you may have at any time before your surgery. Informed patients have greater satisfaction with their decisions and outcomes. Potential risks for breast augmentation surgery include general surgical risks along with a few that are specific to implant surgeries, such as:
- Asymmetry
- Blood or fluid collection
- Capsular contracture
- Excessive bleeding
- Infection
- Poor healing
- Rupture or leakage of the implant

Breast Augmentation FAQs
Other than reconstruction after breast cancer surgery, breast augmentation is considered a cosmetic procedure and is not covered by most insurance companies. Ineligible coverage includes all costs for the hospital, anesthesia, and any potential subsequent surgeries. The FDA also recommends periodic MRI scans of the implants that are not covered, either. These and any other potential out of pocket costs will be discussed in your initial consultation.
Though we provide a general guideline of surgical costs, the final number depends on several factors. Some of those include surgical and anesthesia fees, medical supplies, the type of implant, and any other procedures to be performed. Once you and your surgeon have clearly defined your goals and identified the right procedure for you, we can provide detailed information about the costs.
