Dimples are small indentations that usually appear on the face in the cheek or chin area. A common genetic trait, dimples are widely considered attractive. Some cultures also perceive dimples to be a sign of veracity, good fortune, and fertility.
WHAT ARE DIMPLES?
Dimples are typically visible only when someone smiles or takes on an animated expression. This is because dimples are usually caused by a shortened muscle. When someone with shortened facial muscles smiles, the muscles pull at the skin, revealing the dimple. Over time, the facial muscles may stretch, resulting in the loss of the dimple. This is why children’s dimples typically fade as they age. Because of this, dimples are also commonly associated with a youthful facial appearance. Contact Us To Make An Appointment!
How a Dimple Surgery Works
If you weren’t born with dimples, or they have faded as you’ve aged, Dr. Abdullah can create dimples in your cheeks through a quick outpatient cosmetic surgery procedure called dimpleplasty. The goal of the procedure is to adhere the skin to the cheek muscle, so when the muscle contracts during smiling, the overlying skin indents. After the cheek heals, scar tissue permanently connects the skin and underlying muscle to create an indentation when the muscle moves. Dr. Abdullah will anesthetize the area and make a tiny incision in the cheek to create a small depression. He will use a stitch to attach the underside of the cheek skin below the dimple to the deeper layer of the skin and hold it in place with a long-lasting suture.
Dimpleplasty: Creating the Perfect Smile
The placement of the dimple is crucial to a good result. Typically, cheek dimples are located at the interaction of two lines: a horizontal line extending from the mouth, and a vertical line extending out from the outer corner of the eye. If you have a different preference for the placement of your dimples, Dr. Abdullah will attempt to accommodate your request.
The entire procedure usually lasts about 30 minutes and is done at our Tampa plastic surgery practice.
