OTOPLASTY CANDIDATES
Otoplasty may be appropriate if your ears (or your child’s ears):
- Are too large
- Are uneven
- Are misshapen
- Protrude significantly
- Have developed a deformity after an injury or trauma
- Have misshapen or torn earlobes
In order to qualify as a suitable otoplasty candidate, you should be in good general health and free of any serious medical conditions that could increase the surgical risks.
Otoplasty is common among adults and young children (starting at age 5) who are embarrassed by the way their ears look. For his youngest patients, Dr. Abdullah prefers to wait until their ears have reached their full size (usually around age 5 or 6). Otoplasty can save a child from years of merciless teasing and bulling about the appearance of their ears. Contact Arviv Plastic Surgery to get an Otoplasty (Ear Surgery) in Tampa, FL.

The Otoplasty Procedure
Otoplasty is performed on an outpatient basis with anesthesia.
First, Dr. Abdullah makes an incision either inside or behind the ear to access the underlying structures. He will vary his technique based on the specific case and desired cosmetic result. For example, he may remove excess cartilage/tissue causing the ear to protrude. This brings the ear closer to the head and allows it to lay flat. Dr. Abdullah can also reshape or contour the cartilage to correct structural deformities. If needed, he may graft cartilage from another area of the body and transplant it to the ear to reconstruct it.
When he’s finished making the surgical modifications, Dr. Abdullah will close the incision with sutures and place surgical dressings. Please make sure to Contact Us if you have questions about Otoplasty.
Recovering from Otoplasty
Dr. Abdullah will provide aftercare instructions that detail how to care for the incisions, how to control pain and when to return for a follow-up visit.
Everyone recovers at a different pace, and it’s important not to rush the recovery, as doing so could cause complications.
Swelling, numbness, and tenderness are all normal side effects and no cause for concern. You should rest as much as possible for the first week of your recovery. Gentle walking is good for circulation but avoid vigorous exercise. Dr. Abdullah recommends keeping the head elevated at all times and avoiding putting any pressure on the ear. Oral medication can relieve any discomfort or pain during the recovery.
Dr. Abdullah will schedule several follow-up visits to remove the surgical dressings, check the healing progress and advise when it is safe to return to school, work and other regular activities.
