Gender Affirmation Surgery

Gender Reassignment Surgery Tampa, FL

Gender Affirmation Surgeries

Dr. Ahmed Abdullah is among a small group of surgeons in the United States who specializes in gender reassignment surgery and transgender surgery, with an emphasis on male-to-female bottom surgery.

As you consider GRS surgery, you will have many questions. The first will be where are gender reassignment doctors near me. The next will be what to expect from SRS surgery. Though details will come from your surgeon and depend upon which procedure you are considering, some general guidelines can help you get a better idea of the months preceding and immediately following your surgery.

Male-to-Female (MTF) Bottom Surgery

Dr. Abdullah offers a comprehensive MTF surgery that encompasses six unique procedures. The complete surgery takes up to five hours and provides transgender women with fully functioning female genitalia. Gender-affirming surgery patients benefit from Dr. Abdullah’s extensive experience in this area, along with his unparalleled bedside manner. As a patient of Dr. Abdullah’s at Arviv Plastic Surgery in Tampa, FL, you can expect to be treated with empathy and respect as you undergo the transition process.

The procedures included in the comprehensive MTF surgery include:

  1. Penectomy: This procedure removes the penis.
  2. Orchidectomy (also called Orchiectomy): This procedure removes the testicles and the spermatic cord, decreasing testosterone levels.
  3. Urethroplasty: This procedure shortens the existing urethra and relocates its opening.
  4. Vaginoplasty: During this procedure, erectile tissue is removed and the skin from the shaft is inverted to create a vaginal cavity.
  5. Labiaplasty: Using penile tissue, a vulva and labia are constructed.
  6. Clitoroplasty: Using penile tissue, a clitoris is constructed. The resulting clitoris is capable of sexual sensation.

Female-to-Male (FTM) Top Surgery

Top surgeries offered by Dr. Abdullah for transgender men include:

Tampa Subcutaneous Mastectomy

This procedure removes breast tissue in both breasts. Nipples and areolas are repositioned for a natural appearance.

Tampa Breast Reduction

For transgender men who do not wish to have complete removal of breast tissue, a breast reduction can be completed, which removes just a part of the tissue in each breast to flatten the chest.

Female Feminization Surgery

This procedure modifies various bony and soft tissues of the face, resulting in typical female facial characteristics. Procedures may be performed simultaneously or individually. To see some of the procedures offered in Tampa Facial Feminization Surgery view the helpful links section below.

Transgender Reassignment Surgery Before and After

The first step in the process is confirming eligibility:

  • You must have lived socially as your chosen gender for at least the past 12 months.
  • You must have recommendations from two licensed therapists, one with a doctorate and the other with at least a master’s in clinical behavioral science, for gender reassignment surgery.
  • Your BMI is recommended to be less than 28 for the best chance of success, but we can discuss this during your consultation as BMI can be misleading.

To sum up: you’ll need a letter from an Endocrinologist stating an okay for surgery, you’ve been on hormone replacement for at least one year and doing well with your health.

How To Prepare for Surgery

After searching for the best SRS surgeons and choosing Dr. Abdullah, it is finally time to prepare for your SRS MTF surgery. Stop smoking or using nicotine products at least one month before and two months after surgery. Those who routinely use nicotine before and after SRS surgery experience more scarring, infections, and wound issues than non-users.

To lower the risk of blood clots, you’ll also need to stop taking any estrogen products for one month before surgery. Stop aspirin or ibuprofen two weeks before surgery to remove the risk of excessive bleeding.

What To Expect From Your Surgical Stay

Though we will discuss reassignment SRS surgery before and after expectations in our consultation and preoperative visit, here is a summary of what to expect:

The day before surgery

Drink only clear liquids and jello. Follow bowel prep instructions.

The day of your surgery

After you have arrived, you will be given something to relax. As the time for your surgery approaches, your surgeon will be with you as you are put to sleep under general anesthesia. SRS MTF surgery will begin. Once your surgery is completed, you will wake up in the recovery room. You’ll feel a feeling of fullness from the catheter and vaginal packing.

After your surgery

We’ll start by keeping your pain under control while resting, recovering, and healing. You will be allowed to sit up in bed immediately, get out of bed, and start to walk on the second day. You’ll have your dressings changed, and you’ll continue to walk a little more each day. On the seventh day after surgery, you have the vaginal packing and bladder catheter removed, and we’ll go over your care routines of dilation and douching. Finally, on the ninth day after surgery, you’ll be released to go home with your Surgical Declaration letter.

What To Expect During Recovery

Once you return home from the hospital, you may see some bleeding, oozing, or discharge from the incision sites or blood signs when a catheter is removed. If you experience bleeding, light pressure using a fingertip over the site for five minutes should stop it. Expect the wounds to look worse before they look better, with improvements beginning approximately 2-3 weeks post-surgery. The swelling can take months to subside.

It is important to stay alert to signs of complications. Though rare, if you notice any of the following signs, call the surgeon’s office immediately:

  • Significant bleeding not stopped with pressure
  • Foul-smelling or pus-filled discharge
  • Fever over 101° F
  • New or significant pain
  • Wound separation

Dilating and Douching

Transgender care for the vaginal walls after SRS MTF includes dilating regularly. In natal women’s vaginas, there is a natural process of sloughing and lubrication that keeps the vaginal walls from fusing. The trans woman needs to prevent the neovaginal walls from fusing by dilation. Douching is also required to gently rinse the vagina every other day for the first two months following surgery. After the second month, continue twice weekly and after penetrative sex.

Bowel Movements

Expect some slowness due to pain medication. Do not strain. Use an OTC stool softener like Miralax.

Resuming Activity After GRS

  • Sex – For those who have undergone GRS MTF surgery, you may have penetrative sex using a lubricant beginning 12 weeks post-surgery.
  • Exercise – You can start gentle exercise after four weeks but restrict all other exercise or outdoor activities until your surgeon releases you.
  • Swimming – Hot tubs, swimming pools, or open water is out of the question for the first 12 weeks.
