Rhinoplasty in Tampa, FL

WHAT IS RHINOPLASTY (NOSE JOB)?

Most people associate the term “rhinoplasty” or “nose job” with the cosmetic aspects of the procedure — for example, improving the size, shape, contour or features of the nose for a more pleasing overall appearance. With rhinoplasty, Dr. Abdullah can correct the following problems:

  • Bump on the bridge of the nose
  • Oversized or flared nostrils
  • Bulbous, drooping or upturned tip
  • Crooked, asymmetrical or off-center nose

THE COMPLEXITIES OF THE PROCEDURE

Rhinoplasty is a challenging and complicated plastic surgery procedure for several reasons:

  1. The intricate, three-dimensional nature of the nasal anatomy
  2. Unforeseen events during surgery
  3. The importance of the nose to the overall symmetry and harmony of the face

Therefore, it is imperative that your rhinoplasty be performed by a surgeon with precise surgical skill and sound aesthetic judgment.

Types Of Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty may also be performed for functional reasons. Functional rhinoplasty involves modifying the nose’s structural components (e.g., the cartilage or bone) to treat a breathing obstruction and improve the quality of respiration.

Please note that it is common for Dr. Abdullah to combine cosmetic and functional rhinoplasty into a single operation when needed.

In cases where previous rhinoplasty failed to produce the desired results or caused a deformity, revision rhinoplasty may become necessary. Revision rhinoplasty may involve making small tweaks or completely rebuilding the nose to improve its appearance.

Revision rhinoplasty is a much more complex procedure than primary rhinoplasty, due to potential scar tissue and lack of cartilage to work with, and therefore requires a surgeon with exceptional skill and vast experience, like Dr. Abdullah.

The Rhinoplasty Procedure

Generally, rhinoplasty is suitable for individuals who:

  • Are in good physical and psychological health
  • Do not smoke (or plan to quit at least two weeks prior to surgery)
  • Do not have an uncontrolled medical issue that could increase the risks of surgery or impede healing
  • Have a positive attitude about surgery
  • Have reasonable and realistic expectations for surgery
  • Are pursuing surgery of their own volition

Dr. Abdullah works with teenagers seeking rhinoplasty; however, he prefers to wait until the teen’s nose has fully developed before moving forward with surgery. (This typically occurs around ages 14-15 for girls and 16-17 for boys.)

Before scheduling a rhinoplasty with Dr. Ahmed Abdullah, a consultation is a required first step. During the consultation, Dr. Abdullah will ask you to explain what you don’t like about your nose as well as your desired results. He will describe the procedure and invite you to ask questions about it. He will also perform a physical examination of your nose, noting its unique features, skin quality and thickness, and any structural abnormalities. Dr. Abdullah will also examine your chin and other facial features in relation to your nose, and if he feels it would be helpful, he will recommend chin augmentation or another procedure to ensure optimal facial harmony and symmetry.

Rhinoplasty is completed on an outpatient basis under anesthesia. You will be able to leave a few hours after your procedure to recover at home.

Rhinoplasty is performed using one of two approaches: “open” or “closed.” If Dr. Abdullah sees that the open approach is required, he will make incisions across the strip of skin separating the nostrils (called the columella); if he instead sees that a closed approach can be used, he limits the incisions to the inside of the nostrils. Through the incisions, Dr. Abdullah gently lifts the skin from the underlying nasal structures and makes the necessary modifications. These could include adding or removing cartilage or sculpting the existing cartilage to alter the size or shape of the nose. It could also include refining the tip or nostrils. When he’s finished, he will close the incisions with sutures and bandage the nose.

Recovering From Your Rhinoplasty (Nose Job)

Recovery from surgery is one of the most common concerns of Dr. Abdullah’s Midwest rhinoplasty patients. Everyone heals at a different pace, but there are some commonalities of the recovery process. By being as candid as possible about what to expect during this period, Dr. Abdullah is able to prepare his patients for recovery and ensure that they will be more satisfied with the overall experience.

Most patients agree that the first 24 hours after surgery are the most difficult of the recovery. During this time, the effects of the anesthesia may wear off and you may start to feel some mild discomfort. This can be alleviated with prescription pain medication or an over-the- counter remedy. Take the medications as directed to reduce pain. If Dr. Abdullah says it is appropriate, apply soft, cold compresses to the face to reduce swelling and pain.

You will also have mild to moderate swelling and bruising, but these side effects will disappear with time. Other common side effects are bleeding and soreness.

You should rest as much as possible, either in bed or on the couch, and keep your head elevated at all times (even while sleeping). Avoid any strenuous movement or blowing your nose, as this could compromise the results of your surgery.

It’s important to get plenty of rest and relaxation in the week or two following your procedure. Gentle walking is permitted, but bending, straining and lifting are not. Eat light meals and stay hydrated.

Dr. Abdullah will schedule several follow-up appointments to remove your surgical dressings, check your healing progress, answer your questions, and clear you to return to work, school, and your everyday activities.

Most of the post-operative side effects will disappear within about two weeks. It’s important to avoid any jarring movement (such as jogging) or activity that could result in a blow or trauma to the nose (such as contact sports) for approximately eight weeks. Air travel is not recommended for several weeks after your surgery.

Your rhinoplasty results will start to become visible as the swelling and bruising disappear. However, minor residual swelling may persist for several months up to a year after surgery.
