Breast reduction is a surgery performed to reduce breast size, putting them in more harmonious proportion to the rest of the body. For some individuals, breast reduction is pursued to relieve chronic back, neck or shoulder pain; to eliminate persistent heat rashes under the breasts; or to regain full physical mobility that has been hindered by their bra size.
Patients turn to Dr. Ahmed Abdullah for their breast reduction surgery because of his high surgical skill, as well as his status as one of the Midwest’s few short-scar specialists. By using a short-scar technique, Dr. Abdullah can ensure minimized scarring following your breast reduction procedure. Along with his warm and experienced staff, Dr. Abdullah places a priority on superior patient care and technical precision. The result? An improved profile that leaves you feeling more confident and pain-free.
If you are self-conscious about the size of your breasts or feel your large breast size limits your ability to lead an active life, you are generally an excellent candidate for breast reduction surgery. Additional factors that demonstrate you are appropriate for this surgery include:
- Your breasts are fully developed
- Your breasts “feel” heavy and put a physical strain on your back, neck and/or shoulders and cause you to have poor posture
- Your nipples and areola point downward
- Your breasts are two different sizes, with one significantly larger than the other
The first step to pursuing a breast reduction is to undergo a consultation with Dr. Abdullah, who will discuss the details of the procedure with you while performing a physical examination and inquiring about your medical history. He will verify that you are in good health and will ensure that your expectations of surgery are reasonable and realistic. If Dr. Abdullah determines that you are, indeed, a good candidate for breast reduction surgery, he will develop a treatment plan that addresses your specific goals.
Following the administration of anesthesia to ensure your comfort throughout the surgery, Dr. Abdullah will make a discreet incision on the breast, the location of which will be determined by your unique situation. Depending on the extent of the reduction, he may remove fatty tissue (via liposuction), breast tissue and excess skin to reshape the breast. The nipple and areola are then repositioned to a natural location and the original incision is sutured.
Most patients are able to go home just a few hours after their breast reduction surgery.
Dr. Abdullah and his team will send you home with detailed aftercare instructions and solutions for pain control. You are encouraged to contact him with any questions or concerns you have between leaving the clinic and your first follow-up appointment, which often occurs two days after surgery.
In the days following surgery, your breasts will be sore and swollen. Dr. Abdullah will advise that you sleep on your back and wear a surgical bra regularly. In approximately two weeks, most women are able to resume light activity. Depending upon the progress of your healing and the physical requirements of your job, you can expect to return to work in three to four weeks to ensure that incisions are fully healed.
