What is SRT?<\/h3>\n

SRT involves\u00a0using X-rays to target the skin where a keloid was removed. It helps prevent the recurrence of the keloid.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

What is Keloid?<\/h3>\n

A keloid is an overgrowth of scar tissue that can happen after trauma, piercings, or surgery. The body normally heals by creating a scar and then the signal to stop making scar tissue turns on when the healing process is complete. In some patients that signal does not come on and so the growth process continues and develops into a larger bulky scar on the skin.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Keloids are can also be painful and itchy and can cause significant discomfort but also can make patients self-conscious when located in a visible area of the body that is not easily covered.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How can you stop the growth of the keloids?<\/h3>\n

If you are prone to keloids you need to be more careful about trauma, cuts and you may need to consider SRT with surgical procedures.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

Can I prevent Keloids?<\/h3>\n

Some Keloids cannot be prevented and often patients are uncertain what triggered the keloid growth. Keloids growth can be prevented by injecting steroids, or if removing the keloid surgically, the recurrence can be prevented but using SRT after the treatment.<\/p>\n

How is SRT Preformed?<\/h3>\n

Your keloid or scar will be isolated and the usual X-ray protective apron is worn. The X-ray dose is divided into 2 or 3 doses over 2 or 3 subsequent days. The treatment only takes a few minutes. It is superficial delivery of Xray that only penetrates to the level of the skin<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

What do I do after my SRT treatments?<\/h3>\n

It is important to avoid the sun and treat the skin like you have a sunburn, keep it moist with ointment or aloe. You most likely will experience some hyperpigmentation which is darkening of the kin in that area which will subside over the following months but may be permanent. This is more likely on patients with darker complexion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>
