Yag lasers are the optimal method for removing tattoos from the skin. Traditional approaches, including dermabrasian, salabrasion, and Argon or CO2 lasers may leave scars. The Yag laser, however, is proven to significantly lighten or remove tattoo inks, especially dark colors like blue and black, with minimal risk of scarring.
Through this procedure, short pulses of high-intensity light are directed at the tattoo. The laser light, which is absorbed by the tattoo ink in the skin, eventually causes the inks to break into tiny fragments that are removed by the body’s scavenger cells.
During the procedure, patients may experience slight discomfort. (The laser light feels similar to the snap of a thin rubber band.) After an average of six treatments, spaced one month apart, most patients experience a greater than 95% fading of the tattoo. Most individuals do not require anesthesia during the procedure. Common side effects include a temporary sunburned appearance.
