Mastopexy (Breast Lift)
Mastopexy is a procedure whereby sagging breasts are raised and reshaped, most often following weight loss or pregnancy, or due to aging. Women’s breasts commonly lose firmness over time due to the loss of breast volume and the stretching of breast skin. When sagging and loss of volume is minimal, breast augmentation is a preferred approach. Mastopexy, however, is the appropriate treatment when these characteristics are more pronounced.

During the procedure, incisions are made around the areola, vertically downward, then under the breast at the inframammary fold. The nipple and areola are then moved to a more normal position and excess skin beneath the breast is removed. Closing the skin incisions recontours the breast to a higher position with a more youthful appearance. Depending upon the patient’s goals, breast implants may be placed in conjunction with a breast lift.

Mastopexy is performed under general anesthesia in an outpatient facility. Following the procedure, patients may experience bleeding, swelling, decreased sensitivity and discoloration. Generally, however, patients may begin resuming normal activity approximately one week post-surgery.
